How does a student get started?
An adult needs to install CaRT on the computer, and then help the student with the directions for taking 3 tests: a Spelling Test, a Listening Test, and a Naming Speed Test. The scores on these tests will determine the student’s abilities, and the program will automatically start them at the appropriate level.
How long will this take to administer?
A pre-test (The Reading Efficiency Test) is provided to assess each student’s current reading ability. This test can be given on the computer and will take about 20 minutes to administer. This will give a baseline level for each student prior to starting the tutoring. CaRT will require about 3 minutes to install. Then, it will require about one hour for an adult to assist with the directions for taking the tests. Then, it is recommended that students spend 30-60 minutes a day on the tutor for at least one school year. The student will work on the tutor independently and at their own pace. Constant adult assistance is not required.
Student progress can be monitored by periodically reviewing the records that are kept by the program. Information can be generated regarding the dates the student worked on the tutor program, how many minutes the student worked, and which words were mastered.
What kind of computer system is needed to run CaRT?
CaRT requires an IBM compatible multimedia PC with CD-ROM disk drive, Windows 98 or later, internet access, and speakers or a headset.
Is CaRT researched and scientifically based?
Yes, a three year study using control groups showed CaRT to be very successful. Students who completed and passed 45 or more of the 50-word levels (out of 184 total) during the school year have had average gains of 2 grades in reading achievement. This was an average of 1 grade equivalent more than students who do not get the tutoring. CaRT is eligible to receive Title I funding as a researched and scientifically based program.
